In short
- The radar runs on your device. Your lessons, progress, voyages, settings and Sea Record Book stay on your device.
- We hold what an account, a plan, a beta sign-up or a feedback report needs - and nothing for advertising.
- No ads. No tracking. No analytics or crash-reporting tools. We do not sell your information.
- Voice orders are turned into text by your device's speech recognition. The app keeps no audio.
- You can delete your Marine Radar Lab data in the app, delete your whole Seaman App account, or write to us.
Who we are
Marine Radar Lab is made by Simplified Maritime (Seaman App) - Simplified Maritime Tutorial Services, the operator of the Seaman App - in the Philippines. We are responsible for the personal information described here and handle it in line with the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10173).
Marine Radar Lab signs you in with your Seaman App account, the same account the Seaman App uses. That account - your sign-in, your profile and anything you keep in the Seaman App - is covered by the Seaman App privacy policy. This notice covers what Marine Radar Lab itself adds.
What we collect, and why
Your account
What: your account's email address and user ID, and your name when Google or Apple supplies it. You sign in with email and password, with Google, or on iPhone and iPad with Apple. If you choose Apple's "Hide My Email", we receive Apple's relay address instead of yours. Passwords are handled by the sign-in service and are never readable by us.
Why: to sign you in and to attach your plan to you, so it follows you to your other devices.
Subscriptions
What: for each subscription, the store (App Store or Google Play), the product and plan, the store's purchase identifiers (Google Play's purchase token and order number, or the App Store's original transaction ID), its state, the date it is paid through, whether it renews, and the store's latest record of it. On the App Store we also keep the purchase's app account token, a one-way code made from your user ID. The stores send us updates when a subscription renews, changes or ends.
Why: to unlock your plan, keep it working offline, and restore it on another device. Payment is taken by Apple or Google. Your card or bank details never reach us.
Device check for your plan (Android)
What: when the app checks your plan, it registers the device: a fingerprint of a security key the app creates on the device, the device model and Android version, the app version, whether the app's signing certificate is genuine, simple signs of tampering (such as a rooted phone), and when the device was first and last seen.
Why: to tie your plan to your devices, limit how many devices share one plan, and protect the app against copying. This record is not used for anything else.
Beta sign-up and complimentary access
What: if you sign up for the beta on this website: your name, the email address of your Google account, your country, your rank or role, your device model, how you heard about us, your agreement to the beta terms (and their version), whether you want news about the app, your browser's user-agent string, and a hashed (one-way scrambled) form of your IP address. We also note when we emailed you and your status in the beta. To give you access, your email address may be added to the Google group that lists testers for the Google Play test. A short line about each new sign-up (name, email, role, country, device model and how you heard) is posted to our private Telegram group so the developer sees it.
If we give you complimentary access, we keep your email address, the plan and number of days given, and when it started and ends, linked to your account once you use it.
Why: to run the beta, give you access, email you about it, and limit abuse (the hashed IP allows at most five sign-ups an hour from one connection). News emails are sent only if you ticked the box.
Feedback you send from the app
What: the kind of feedback and your words; if you leave it ticked, a screenshot of the screen you were on; the app version and build, the platform, your device model, your plan, the screen you were on, and recent error messages from the app; whether you are happy to be contacted. If you are signed in, your user ID and your account's email go with it; if not, the email address you type (optional) and a hashed form of your IP address. Screenshots are stored in private storage that only we can read.
Each report is also posted to the developer's private Telegram group: the details above, your words and the screenshot. Your email address is included there only if you ticked "You may contact me about this".
Why: to find and fix problems, improve the teaching, and answer you. The hashed IP or your user ID limits reports to ten an hour.
Emails
We send emails about the beta (your sign-up and your access) and, only if you asked for them, news about the app. They go out through the Seaman App's email delivery service; replies come to admin@seamanapp.com. Every beta email tells you how to be removed.
What stays on your device
Your lessons, scores, progress, voyages, settings and your Sea Record Book - including any photo you add to it - are kept on your device only and are not sent to us. The camera and photo library are used only when you choose to take or pick a photo for your Sea Record Book. If you are signed in, the Sea Record Book can show your own Seaman App records (documents and sea service) by reading them from your account; it writes nothing back. A PDF or backup of the book leaves your device only if you share it yourself. Uninstalling the app removes what it kept on the device.
The app also keeps your sign-in session, a signed licence for your plan, and any feedback waiting for a connection, on the device.
Microphone and speech
The microphone is used only in Captain mode and for your readback in the steering exercises, and only while they are open. You can give every order by tapping instead.
- Android: by default the app uses a speech model built into the app that runs entirely on the device. If that model cannot be used, or you choose the phone's own recogniser, Android's speech recognition is used, which may send the audio to Google's speech service to turn it into text.
- iPhone and iPad: Apple's speech recognition turns your words into text. Apple may process the audio on its servers.
Only the recognised text reaches the app, which uses it to steer the simulated ship. The app keeps no audio and no text, and sends neither to us. The crew's replies are spoken by your device's own text-to-speech. Speech handled by Apple or Google is covered by their privacy policies.
This website
- The site is served by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address to deliver the pages and protect them from attacks.
- The pages load their fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google's servers for them.
- After you sign up, the page remembers that in your browser's local storage, on your device. Our pages set no advertising or analytics cookies.
- If you choose to support the project's development through this website, the payment is made on PayMongo's or PayPal's own page. We keep the amount, the optional name and message you give, the payment's reference and status, and a hashed form of your IP address. We never see your card or account details.
What we do not do
- No advertising, in the app or on this website.
- No tracking across other companies' apps or websites, and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics, crash-reporting or advertising tools in the app or on these pages.
- No location, contacts or files are collected.
- We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with anyone for their own marketing.
Who handles it for us
These services process information on our behalf, only to do the job named:
- Supabase - our database, sign-in, server functions and private file storage (the Seaman App's own project; its policy gives the hosting region as Singapore).
- Cloudflare - hosts this website.
- Apple - App Store purchases, Sign in with Apple, speech recognition on iPhone and iPad.
- Google - Google Play purchases, Google sign-in, Android speech recognition, the Google group for beta testers, and the fonts on these pages.
- The Seaman App's email delivery service - sends our emails.
- Telegram - carries the sign-up and feedback notices to the developer's private group.
- PayMongo and PayPal - only if you support the project's development on this website.
Some of these providers process information outside the Philippines. We use them only for the purposes above.
How long we keep it
- Your Seaman App account: as the Seaman App privacy policy says - for as long as the account exists.
- Subscription records, registered devices and your beta sign-up: until you delete them in the app, or ask us to.
- Feedback (with any screenshot), complimentary access records, support records and the Telegram notices: until you ask us to delete them.
- What is on your device: until you delete it or uninstall the app.
Deleting your data
In the app, signed in: Menu › More › Help · Account › About › Privacy and your account.
- Delete my Radar Lab data deletes your subscription records, your registered devices and your beta sign-up from our servers, and signs you out. If a store subscription is still renewing, cancel it in the store first - deleting our record would not stop the store charging you.
- Delete my Seaman App account opens seamanapp.com/delete-account.html, which deletes the shared account completely. Any Marine Radar Lab records still held are then no longer linked to an account; to have them erased as well, use Delete my Radar Lab data first, or write to us.
- Anything else - feedback, screenshots, complimentary access, Telegram notices, support records: write to admin@seamanapp.com, preferably from the email address concerned, and we will delete it.
Help with all of this, and with cancelling subscriptions, is on the help page.
Your rights
Under the Data Privacy Act you may ask to be told what we hold about you, to get a copy, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to or withdraw your agreement to its use. Write to admin@seamanapp.com. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may complain to the Philippines' National Privacy Commission.
Security
Everything travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). The tables that hold your information cannot be read from the web: only our server functions and the developer can read them, and a signed-in user can read only their own plan, device and complimentary-access records. IP addresses are stored only in hashed form. Feedback screenshots are kept in private storage.
Children
Marine Radar Lab is a professional training tool for seafarers and maritime students. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Its store age rating describes its content, not its audience. If you believe a child has given us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes and contact
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this notice and its effective date on this page.
